"The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum has made the history of Coventry's political, religious and industrial past come to life with beautiful symbolism, artistic display and interactivity that is accessible to all."
Amy Rugg, Coventry

"The Herbert Art gallery is exceptional. Since the revamp it has become a cultural centre of the city and, finally, Coventry has an art gallery it can be proud of. I and many friends grew up having to go to Birmingham, London and Liverpool to see great art but now, with a gallery slap bang in the middle of the city, we no longer have to. The Herbert has a great vibe. It is a modern, cool and welcoming gallery and being at the heart of Coventry University it has a youthful energy which really makes you feel like you're a part of something. This place is brilliant and has come a long way in a very short time."

Jamie Perry, Head of Marketing and Communications briefly shares his thoughts on his work and why he loves working here
"The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum has undergone a magnificent renovation and now offers a more contemporary edge to its collection. Its new covered courtyard is a prime example of excellent design integrity which echoes the surrounding streetscape and architecture perfectly. The city of Coventry is lucky to have such an award winning facility serving both its local and national community."
James Sewell, Coventry

"The Herbert is an incredibly welcoming space; I don't usually bother with stuffy Art Galleries, but felt very comfortable in Coventry. Not only is the artwork on display excellent, but the staff I spoke to were very happy to help, and when they didn't know an answer they pointed me towards the resources available in the gallery which did provide the answer I wanted."
Charlotte Connelly, Daventry

"The Herbert should win because it is a magnificent piece of architecture which delicately references the detailing of its striking neighbour the ‘new’ Basil Spence cathedral. It represents an attitude of forward thinking regeneration in a town which had lost its way but is now truly rising from the flames. It showcases not only national art and exhibitions but also local talent and history. All of which makes me proud of Coventry and proud of The Herbert for what they’ve done, are doing and will do."
Katy Francioso, Coventry

"The Herbert is a place I visited as child on school trips and with friends and family at the weekends. It’s constantly growing expanding and encouraging all to go and interact with the past present and future, thoughts ideas and concepts. A friend rang me from inside the Herbert last week and said, "It’s heaving in here". Surely this is what all museums dream of in order to secure their future. Thank you all who have worked, do and will work there to continue Coventry's history."
Ondy Burgess

"Because the Herbert is a real gem in our city. It provides a glimpse into our wondrous past, celebrates our own living history now and helps nurture our younger generation through inspiring surroundings and creative work shops. The Herbert is a source of research and a font of knowledge. The Herbert shares its professional departments with the community of Coventry too. It encourages partnership and family learning in a truly valuable way. The Herbert provides an experience where family-friendly traditional and contemporary exhibitions come alive. Exciting and interactive, fun and also sometimes deeply thought-provoking – the ultimate in discovering who and what Art can be. A place to be proud of, a place to share with our families, our schools, our business partners, our universities, and our tourists. Our local treasure befitting world class acclaim."
Pru Porretta, Coventry

"The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum has become, since its recent re-incarnation, the cultural heart of the city of Coventry. A century of poor planning, the bombings and the removal of industry from the city had reduced the identity of Coventrians to victims of circumstance. The Herbert has now become a repository for Coventry Identity, celebrating the invention and heroicism of the past, the vibrancy of the present and the hope for the future. The array of exhibitions provides something for every taste and ways of seeing things in a new light – whether 8 or 80. Who we were, who we are and who we hope to be are all evidenced at the Herbert. "
Alice Willison, Coventry

"Following a magnificent refurbishment, the Herbert is a place filled with light - and enlightenment! It just feels good to walk in there, and the range of exhibitions is fantastic, combining a unique collection with temporary exhibits including animation, photography and interactive children's installations – appealing to a real cross-section of the local population and visitors alike. Education activities are stimulating and varied. Friendly staff and a fabulous cafe (best museum lunches ever!) make it welcoming for all the family – my four year old like it as much as my 80 year old parents. Each time there is a new children's exhibit, word goes round all the mums like wildfire – it is bound to be a 'must do'. In addition to all this, the Herbert really supports the local arts sector – from featuring great music on Sundays, to profiling the work of local visual artists, and much more."
Philippa Cross, Coventry

"Because The Herbert is truly a Museum and Art Gallery for the people of Coventry as well as visitors to the city. The Herbert manages to range from providing academic historical resources to producing rock music for aspiring musicians all under one roof and make that feel absolutely right. It always makes me feel proud to come from Coventry when I visit The Herbert."
Ruth Miller, Coventry

"The gallery is interesting and fun to look around for all ages. I particularly enjoyed the interactives in the History Centre and Elements. They have also put on some good non permanent exhibitions like More than 2 Tones which judging by the comments in the visitor's book a lot of people enjoyed. It certainly brought back memories for my aunt. And the Wallace and Gromit exhibition was very good too."
Cherry Martin, East Looe

"The Herbert provides a vital cultural escape in the city of Coventry and has hosted numerous exhibitions that have benefited the entire spectrum of people living here."
Matt Carpenter

"This is my place of refuge in Coventry city centre. It's calm, airy and light. I am a frequent visitor and feel under no pressure to see everything at once. Sometimes I go in to see a favourite picture. Other times I look at a display that I had never thought of looking at before, it all depends on my mood and how much time I have. I love the space and feel at home there. I know that I will discover something new with every visit. I am not from Coventry but the Herbert has made me feel very welcome."
Julie Hall, South Kilworth

"The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum should win because the latest improvements have created a very modern and user-friendly gallery which always has new and exciting shows. The Gallery takes great care to make the displays local and relevant such as the 2 Tone exhibition. The Herbert is very easy to get round. Finally the café is very good."
David Deas, Coventry

"The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum is a good location for Coventry's events and shows; the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum is a brilliant resource for education and teaching where the vast sections on Coventry's history and the wide range of different works of art in the many galleries. The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum place that I would expect the city of Coventry to be proud of."
James Cobbett, Coventry

"Provides a valuable service including a fascinating and varied programme of exhibitions, events and courses. Open to all, but importantly, serves Coventry, Warwickshire and the West Midlands residents, many of whom would otherwise not have the opportunity of participating in the visual arts."
Malcolm Davis, Stratford-on-Avon

"The Herbert is an oasis in Coventry for me and I love the space in it to be able to meander among the selected art and craft, local artefacts in it. I also appreciate the renovated space in its architecture and airy aspects with the archives. It is not on par with museums in the bigger metropolitan cities but it is appropriate for the locals and visitors who wander in from the cathedral. I have been to many museums and art galleries in the world having lived in Europe, Asia and USA but I say the Herbert can hold its own here."
Eleanor Lisney, Coventry

"Despite recently moving to a trust status, their enthusiasm has not dwindled and the range of exhibitions are diverse and truly excellent. Having volunteered there on several occasions I have seen the passion and hard work which has gone into the displays. They support the community in so many ways, providing interesting and entertaining talks, tours and lectures for everyone. To win the Art Fund prize would be a fitting recognition of the hard work and effort put in by all the staff to keep this wonderful establishment running: from front of house, maintenance, keepers of collections, catering (excellent café), conservators, display builders, and not forgetting the new History centre where I have spent many happy hours perusing records in the archives."
Louise Dodd, Coventry

"The Herbert provides a diverse range of exhibits which engage all ages, though is particularly accessible to younger children. The well thought out refurbishment of the building has created an inspiring space. The exhibits and events at the Herbert provide a great cultural facility which strongly connects with the heritage, community and future of the City of Coventry."
Anne Denby, Coventry

"The Herbert Art Gallery succeeds in hosting a succession of exhibitions that appeal to a wide public – it includes overseas art (e.g. by contemporary Indian artists), work by local artists and material that combines national and local interest (e.g. the designs by Coventry Cathedral's architect, Sir Basil Spence). The Herbert has a central, easily accessible location and excellent facilities for visitors to its exhibitions."
Professor Eleanor Nesbitt

"Lots of interesting events for children and adults, monthly lunchtime lectures, Information by email and post of all the exciting exhibitions to come in the near future."
Maureen Gratton

"The Herbert has a lovely feel when you are there, giving a friendly yet subtle professional ambiance, all this without all the stuffiness that the larger galleries present."
Ian Renshaw

"It really is a super place. Every section is well explained and easy to follow and the staff most helpful. Suitable for all ages, and the café is great too!"
M. Kane

"The relocation of the city's archive/family history collections (from the Central Library) has been a great move. The building is very open and inviting after its renovation. And they have many more special events/music/talks than before."
Scott Redding

"Coventry has had more than its fair share of knocks over the years. From terrible bombings during the war to the devastation caused by the end of the car industry in the area. The Herbert portrays this, but also the great resilience and optimism of the people of Coventry to move forward with foresight and embrace innovation and invest in its young people, without losing sight of its great heritage."
Diane Tapley, Kenilworth

"This museum has a great archive available to the public, so much archaeology and other material is hidden away when donated to museums. This has a great potential for opening up material to Coventry and giving a great example to other less forward thinking institutions."
Pat Chapman, Northampton

"The Herbert has completely reinvented itself and is now the cultural focal point for the entire city. The exhibitions have been excellent and attract a wide range of people. The facilities are great for children and there is a real focus on involving young people in learning. The building itself is wonderful and provides a much needed landmark in the city. My hope is that the Herbert will be a real turning point in the cultural life of Coventry."
David Gray, Birmingham

"The Herbert Art Gallery is an exciting and vibrant environment, and displays a range of material, including items such as modern created costume as works of art. It has exciting and attractive architectural structure, and the commanding position of the Gallery in a square bounded by a University, a Cathedral and the Gallery itself creates a real sense of presence within the city Centre of Coventry. Actually, it’s just delightful, but as a non-artist myself, I don't quite have the words to describe how lovely it is."
Karen Harrison

"Because it’s exciting and different and I love to visit it for a dose of culture."
Jennifer Gardner, Coventry

"The Herbert Art Gallery has a strong sense of national pride with its focus on British art work. Also, it not only collects artwork but also pieces of archaeology which are fundamental to preserve history for posterity. This means that the Herbert Art Gallery is not only entertaining in terms of culture and visual aspects, but it also plays an important role in preserving history."
Bethany Jolliffe, Canterbury

"The Herbert has a wide range of material, far more than would be expected in an area dominated by Birmingham. It makes every effort to encourage use by local people and is especially encouraging to children. Items are well displayed and exhibitions varied."
Jane Black, Coventry

"It is so contemporary so large and bright so different from the norm of a "museum" style.... I just love it."
S. Matthews, Coventry

"The exhibits are always well displayed and informative, with items of interest for all ages."
Brenda Cox, Solihull

"The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum is, saving the small museum and art gallery in Rugby, my local museum. It was a place of pilgrimage when I was a child and I still visit today. Recently rebuilt and refurbished, it somehow retains its personality and ambience. It feels like a friend, still, and the history centre is just great. Special mention of the staff who are extremely welcoming!"
Julia Emerson, Rugby

"The Herbert always had an interesting collection about the History of Coventry and other things including nice staff. The re developed building is a really exciting structure which by its scale, impact and outdoor elements has created a wow factor before you get in. The collection has been really imaginatively displayed-with some inter-active elements but not so many as to detract from it being a proper museum! There is a good café and a range of goods and books in the shop. Some of the competition was in a much more advantageous position than the Herbert to begin with! Coventry has a staggering history which is frequently overlooked-I have several books about English Cathedrals none mentions Coventry's medieval one -the only to be destroyed by Henry VIII."
Stewart Scott

"The Herbert is both exciting and welcoming, with strong links to its own locality such as the Lady Godiva story. It now has a lovely building and this encourages people to go in and see the wonderful range of displays with plenty of opportunities to take part – and a great café too. The Herbert shows how museums can be spirit-stirring as well as informative."
Christine Toynbee

"Set alongside Coventry Cathedral, the Herbert Art Gallery is a stunning building, paying homage to Coventry, and its past in addition to showing new exhibitions. I was particularly moved by their Holocaust Memorial exhibition this year, which was sensitive and yet very informative. The Herbert Art Gallery is very keen on promoting education, and do this from a multicultural perspective. They have transformed their location as well, as promoting Art in Coventry. Their position plays a key role, in further promotion of Art, and is of huge benefit in developing art culture in Coventry. I would therefore like the Art Fund Prize to be awarded to the Herbert Art Gallery, so that they can continue to go from strength to strength, with new and innovative exhibitions."
Oluwatosin Oyeniyi, London

"Wonderful museum."
Fay Redshaw

"The Herbert always succeeds and capturing the spirit and essence of the exhibits it displays. You feel like you are in a time machine."
Sohail Butt, Coventry

"The Herbert has a very interesting collection on Coventry's history; I remember an interesting exhibition on Sir Basil Spence. The Herbert has recently been restored and has relatively recently been re-opened. It also incorporates the Coventry Record Office in the same building which I think is a very good partnership. I think it would be a worthy winner."
Katherine Taylor, Coventry

"It has a diverse collection with something of interest for everyone."
Joanne Spencer, Nuneaton

"Because local museums need this kind of help; the big London ones have all big money."
P. Cobbett

"On entering, it has a pleasant airy atmosphere and gives informative information about the exhibits. The Museum houses and exhibits a vast cross-section of history relating to the local area and is diverse in educating adults and children alike about topical material in all subjects. It is a staff-friendly and informative museum and aims to preserve and exhibit all aspects of social, historical and industrial local and worldly subjects. It caters also for various subject workshops for all ages, enabling a better understanding of those subjects in detail."
Richard Teasdale, Coventry

"The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum should win this prestigious award because it is deserving of the prize; it always holds interesting exhibitions, and to win the prize would be a boost to the people and community of Coventry."
Tim Bonner, Stourbridge

"A museum that has had a remarkable rebirth. Moving from a dowdy, not that interesting place to go, to a place where there is a great variety and depth of visual displays and live events, covering most aspects of the arts world. The local history display is particularly good charting Coventry’s change through the ages. This I personally have visited three times and have reached the Second World War, with more delights to come."
C. Smith, Coventry

"The Herbert offers so much both to visitors to our city and to local people with excellent galleries which appeal both to older and younger visitors. The interactive displays provide a really interesting insight into our city's past, and the local history library is invaluable both to historians and for family historians. I understand from the local newspaper that there is a danger of the hours of this wonderful resource being cut due to financial pressures. Other galleries in the museum offer an ever changing array of exhibits that appeal to a wide range of tastes – something for everyone."
Gillian Thomas

"I regularly call into the museum to do research work using their collection of local newspapers and local documents. The museum is spacious and well lit and it has a variety of areas to view, especially the local history from medieval to Coventry’s modern history. The museum offers excellent catering facilities and the staff are very approachable and helpful. The museum is a must for anyone visiting Coventry."
Stephen Kershaw, Coventry

"A real community museum with a fabulous new extension."
Helen Ansell

"The renovation of Coventry’s Herbert Art Gallery is a remarkable building with access for all. It is like an oasis in a desert of neglect. A truly wonderful building open to the community."
Carol Smith

"It's GREAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Chris

"This Museum is 'User-Friendly' and makes art more accessible to ordinary people. The exhibits and the occasional special exhibitions have fired my enthusiasm for art in all its forms. I believe this Museum deserves to win."
Robert Hickin, Coventry

"The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum was a donation from the Herbert family in the 1930's and should have been completed before 1939 but unfortunately this was postponed until after 1945. Since then on completion it has been a centre point in Coventry and many Coventry amateur artists have been able to exhibit their work in the art gallery, also so many Coventrians have donated so much social history for the museum. Now so much more has been added to enable every member of the family to participate in all the various sections. Visitors to Coventry are all very welcome; there is so much to see and do... (I was born in Coventry in 1920 educated in Coventry and have lived here ever since so I would like to see the Gallery win.)"
Vera Usherwood, Coventry

"It is bright and welcoming; it endeavours to embrace our multi cultural city and reach out to all age groups. There is always something of interest to be found there. In short it's a great place and deserving of our support."
Gail Gamble, Coventry

"They host a wide variety of educational and interesting exhibitions, especially photography exhibitions with an amazing exhibition space and popular venue."
Aaron James Davis, Kenilworth

"This is a vital part of the cultural life of Coventry."
Bill Parkinson

"The Herbert has a wonderful collection of artifacts and is set out so that everything is easy to see."
Pam Skelcher

"Where the present meets the past and future. The only place in town where I can spend five minutes or five hours and still find something new that entertains and informs me. All this in a superb setting."
Christine Bowron, Coventry

"It’s new and fresh; a lot of hard work and money have gone into it. It’s free and parent-friendly and not run by our local council so it struggles hard to survive and does not charge like most art galleries but is always having new ideas and helpful staff, so I think any award is a testament to the staff and gallery itself."
Chris, Coventry

"It celebrates all aspects of life in Coventry - historical, topical, industrial – in a hugely accessible way. It has persuaded the Council to modernise and improve its facilities; it is absolutely central in the city; it is a beacon of culture in a place where, for the size of its population, there are not enough places to feed the soul."
Ruth Wills, Coventry

"Because of the rich, long and strong conceptual historic cultural background of its heritage and multi-faceted contemporary image to the entire UK."
Olugbemiga Abiodun Odunsi, Coventry

"It has been wonderfully restored over the past few years and opened up to the wider community in Coventry bringing in some interesting exhibitions. The Spence exhibition took several lunch hours to fully appreciate. The Wallace and Gromit exhibition was wonderful to see how the popular animations were produced. I recommended these exhibitions to friends who were not normally drawn to visiting a museum and art gallery. They all said how much they and enjoyed and learnt from them."
Judith Payne, Coventry

"It is a really good family museum, I have a lot of memories from visiting it throughout my life."
Tracy Houghton

"The museum allows the people of Coventry to explore Coventry’s past of which there is much to learn. The way you can step into history and see what life was/has been like. A fantastic museum!"
Yvonne Ryan

"Recently re-invented itself and reflects Coventry and its inspirational story, yet is often overlooked by its citizens and visitors."
Graeme Hurry

"The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum has recently undergone an impressive refurbishment and extension. The result is a beautiful space which the people of Coventry and the surrounding areas can be proud of. The gallery should be celebrated for the huge part it plays in the local area by providing a wonderful cultural day out."
Louise McDonagh, Coventry

"The recent development of the Herbert has enabled more of the City's history (economic, cultural and industrial) to be displayed to Coventry citizens and visitors, enabling a greater understanding of the city's heritage. The development and the exhibition spaces created by it (enabling bigger and better visiting exhibitions to be accommodated) deserve to be recognised through this Art Fund award."
Norman Wainwright

"Coventry was one of the last cities in the country to develop a purpose-built museum and art gallery, and for years the Herbert struggled to make a real impact in a place that desperately needed the unifying force of a thriving art and history complex. What's happened in the last two years has been remarkable. Visitor numbers have shot up to more than 300,000 p.a.; the Art Gallery is now on the national exhibitions circuit and the whole complex has begun to take shape as the repository of the city's soul, a role it has never quite been able to fulfill before."
Peter Walters, Coventry

"An inspiring space with inspiring exhibitions – both static and temporary – which works very hard to be accessible to everyone in Coventry and beyond. I am proud that it is in our city."
Penny Walker

"The Herbert is one of favourite cultural venues to visit. Their dedication to customer service and experience is unrivalled in the Midlands and I feel that their interpretation of their pieces is excellent. They are already a wonderful place to visit and I can only dream how great my next visit would be if they received more money to invest in their vision."
Lauren Haycox, Birmingham

"Innovative exhibitions that are of interest to the local community."
Norma Postin, Rugby

"I think the Herbert Gallery should win because it is a fantastic space with consistently high quality shows."
Mark Biddulph, Birmingham

"My local art gallery and museum first introduced me as a small child to art and local history retaining my curiosity over many years. It’s evolved to encourage and enrich all ages to experience more locally by hosting visiting exhibitions enhanced by informed lectures aimed at all abilities – mostly for free! Its outstanding local history remit is extremely important as Coventry lost much in the Blitz and needs to re-establish its identity and raise its profile internationally. The Phoenix, sign of regeneration, adopted by the city, seems pertinent to the Herbert too with its recent state of the art make-over and additional support would help the venue and re-affirm the status of Coventry as a place of art and culture, not just post war redevelopment and subsequent recession and loss of the car industry."
Anne Tippett, Coventry

"A museum founded by a man of our people for our people, providing among other things, a compact and complete history of our city."
Bryan Walker

"The museum's recent refurbishment has created a splendid multi-use atrium which enables simultaneous usage for exhibition space together with lecture facilities. The museum now needs additional funding to help promote this new facility to a wider Midlands audience."
Donald Lindon, Coventry

"It's awesome!"
Anthony Salway

"Because their art is really, really brilliant."
Ben Hymers

"It has a lovely pleasant atmosphere, friendly staff and a wide variety of exhibitions."
Neal Mitchell, Nottingham

"The Herbert has been an important part of Coventry for 50 years. As a child I remember the permanent exhibitions of cars (now moved to award winning Coventry Transport Museum) and the giant loom; now that the museum has been rebuilt, with the history centre on site, it’s twice as wonderful! There has been a tradition of excellent events for children and adults, and I never feel awkward just popping in on my own to have a quiet moment. The staff are friendly and a trip to the superb café really rounds off a visit."
Jo Bottomley

"Coventry has spent a lot of money developing The Herbert, and the result is an extremely attractive building. It has a designated section devoted to the history of Coventry, invaluable to school children, and to tourists alike. It has very interesting permanent exhibitions as well as temporary exhibitions, many of which enable local citizens to show case their own work. There is also a very attractive restaurant serving delicious food. In short, it is a huge asset to the city of Coventry."
Linda Wraige, Coventry

"Because it is quaint and lovely and I love it."

"This museum always excites us with new, visiting displays and exhibitions of great variety. There are also the more permanent exhibitions concerned with the varied and historical aspects of Coventry life and development. Children and adults are invited to have a hands-on approach in some rooms. There are helpful people to answer one's questions. The Herbert feels warm and inviting. There are many events for all, including opportunities for school and other groups to explore subjects in greater depth with guides. It is a museum to return to again and again."

"The Herbert has been an important part of Coventry for half a century. It is part of the collective memory of those who survived the Blitz; it is evolving, innovative and relevant. The new history centre on the site is a national treasure and the staff go out of their way to help people searching for their family history as well as the collective one. There has been a tradition of excellent events for children and adults, and I never feel awkward just popping in on my own to have a quiet moment. The staff are friendly and a trip to the superb café really rounds off a visit."

"I am not a native Coventrian but I am very passionate about this wonderful city and its rich heritage; it has saddened me to the bottom of my heart to witness its recent decline. I am very proud to have been associated with it for this past 38 years and I wholeheartedly give my vote for the Herbert Art Gallery, a unique and wonderful museum…"
Lesley Hamilton, Coventry

"It is Coventry’s best kept secret!!! I love walking through the doors into a different world. Every time I go there I am always impressed by the exhibits I see, the welcome I get from all staff and the whole atmosphere within. I just hope more people come to realise this and benefit as I do."
Alyson Heath, Coventry

"The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum takes the word 'dull' out of museum. Whether you are a child taking the first steps into history or an adult seeking to 'top up' their knowledge this museum welcomes, nurtures and provides easy access to all the relevant information. Being centrally situated it is so convenient for most people in the city and provides a good selection of refreshments which is important to we older Coventrians who appreciate somewhere pleasant to rest our weary legs!"
Doreen Gallimore, Coventry

"It is just a truly splendid museum in a city which needs all the culture it can get. Very peaceful..."
Ann Weitzel

"It may not be as big as some of the competition, but it's still beautiful and has a wonderful range of exhibitions, to rival those in London."

David Hill

"The Herbert has recently undergone a huge refurbishment and is now spacious and revitalised. It has always been at the heart of the city but now boasts superb local history displays as well as some excellent art and sculpture galleries."
Guy Perry

"The main reason is because the Herbert offers the people of Coventry a bit of culture (and boy do some of them need it!!) as well as providing a space for the city to tell its own historical tale. It has a great mix of existing museum features such as the history of Coventry with new exhibitions and activity days for kids and parents to enjoy together. It offers exhibitions for all age groups and with the new addition of the cafe it makes it a great place to spend a day out. The new extension to the building gives it more exhibition space as well as creating an interesting building in itself - mixing the old with the new. Without it Saturday afternoons or Sundays just wouldn't be the same."
Leigh Ashby

"This is a great place that hosts a varied selection of modern pieces and never charges for entry. It is in my home town and I feel it should get support from local people. It is a place I visit often."
Bradley Smithe

"Newly rebuilt state of the art. Visitor numbers have increased fourfold and exceeded expectation."
John Blundell

"The Herbert has been transformed into a gallery and museum that the citizens of Coventry and the country as a whole can be justly proud of."
Pete Kendall, Coventry

"The Herbert is a fantastic place accessible to all; there are local arts and crafts on display and exhibitions to suit all needs. The Wallace and Gromit exhibition has captured a younger audience and made them access the museum, to which now they are returning on a regular basis. The Herbert has a warm and friendly atmosphere and a definite sense of warmth. They cater for everyone even in the cafe where you can buy foods for dietary requirements, such as gluten free foods."
Katie Battle, Birmingham

"The Herbert has always championed local history, expressing through various media why local history is important. Over a number of years The Herbert has informed people of all ages about the culture and history on their doorstep."
Ethel Martin, Coventry

"The galleries highlight the significant periods and events in Coventry's history using to best advantage the items in the museum's collection in an entertaining way and with a balance of informative inter-active screens and very clear descriptive labelling. The contemplative mood of the room relating to conflict, particularly the Blitz in Coventry, was moving, contrasting with the innovative and absorbing elements gallery, a real favourite with children. The tale of Lady Godiva was told in an amusing and sensitive way, both the scene-setting cartoon and the selection of art works. The galleries are well laid out and uncluttered and provide generous areas to display temporary exhibitions. The creature comforts have not been neglected with plenty of toilets and a light and airy café with a varied selection of delicious food. The shop has a comprehensive array of items for sale appealing to the child and the academic."
Stephen Bradford-Best, Hitchin

"The Herbert has been an important part of Coventry for 50 years. Over the years it has adapted to the changing styles of Coventry and offers a whole round enjoyable time when you visit. There has been a tradition of excellent events for children and adults, and I never feel awkward just popping in on my own to have a quiet moment. The staff are friendly and a trip to the superb café really rounds off a visit. "
Lucia Mountain, Nuneaton

"I have grown up with the Herbert from school trips to only just the other week and every time I visit there is always something different and interesting on show. I am really impressed by the Family History centre, and it has been invaluable to my work on my family tree. The new look is great and a breath of fresh air to the town."
Tracy Mair

"The Herbert Art Gallery is in the heart of the City of Coventry in every sense. A beautiful building accessible to all – every local school child knows of it, a favourite of the local people and an inspiration to students and artists at every level. It adds colour and creativity to what can sometimes be a grey and difficult working day. The displays are thought provoking, stimulating and moving, but the Gallery doesn't intimidate, it welcomes its visitors – and it’s got a great café!"
Gill Donaldson, Kenilworth

"The Herbert has been an important part of Coventry for 50 years. Over the years it has adapted to the needs and styles of a changing city and community but remains a place in the heart of many people from Coventry and the surrounding area. There has been a tradition of excellent events for children and adults, and the history centre is superb for documenting the change of the city. The staff are friendly and a trip to the superb café really rounds off a visit."

Adrian Powell, Coventry

"The Herbert Art Gallery is a very interesting and fun place in Coventry’s city center. It offers a great range of exhibits and is a fun, clean and pleasant place to spend your time. I have visited The Herbert Art Gallery many times and think that if they receive the funds they can improve the gallery even more than it has been this attracting more and more people to visit it."
Charlii Brooks

Sharon Bancroft

"The History and information available is second to none and should be preserved."
Caroline Eardley

"The Herbert has been part of Coventry for years – since the days it was a booming industrial heartland it has continued to educate and entertain the local population as a gallery and museum. The exhibits are really informative, ever changing and the atmosphere is really welcoming and comfortable – not something that many other museums and galleries manage to achieve. The Herbert is very much at the heart of the city and it makes a great meeting place and adds some excitement to a city which needs it – it's invaluable!"
Maggie Edwards, Coventry

"This is a super local art gallery – vibrant, in touch with the community, open to outreach ideas and with a lovely cafe that people can use."
Laura Reddish, Whatcote, Warwickshire

"The Herbert has been an important part of Coventry for 50 years. Over the years it has adapted to the needs and styles of a changing city and community but remains a place in the heart of many people from Coventry and the surrounding area. There has been a tradition of excellent events for children and adults, and I never feel awkward just popping in on my own to have a quiet moment. The staff are friendly and a trip to the superb café really rounds off a visit."
D. Langton, Coventry

"The Herbert is both an Art Gallery and museum and therefore it serves two functions. It is in the centre of Coventry close to the Cathedral and the motor museum and can be visited when also taking in those other attractions. It is the sort of place you don't intend to go to but when you do you are pleased you made the effort. I will go again to look at the history section as last time I only had time for the Art which included some good photographic exhibitions at the time. Coventry needs this as well as Primark, IKEA etc."
Jane Collison

"I think the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum should win because it garners no local council funding, and provides an outlet for local artists and exhibitions outside London."

"Interesting, varied, central to the community and the ambience is wonderful."

Isobel Ferguson

"The museum has been re born since being reopened and visitor numbers have increased over the last year by nearly 400%. It is a wonderful well-run family focused museum well serving the needs of Coventry and Warwickshire and deserves national recognition. It has recently focused on the city’s role during the 20th century to include the wartime destruction and re-birth, bringing this to life with the younger residents of the city who otherwise had little knowledge of such events."
Michael Cherrington, Keresley

"The Herbert is wicked :) x"
Roseanne Elkington

":):)"
Catherine Langford

"The Herbert is a vibrant and actively engaging gallery which has provided me with artistic inspiration for many, many years. I would love to see it win the prize money as it is not so well funded as the Ashmolean or other major galleries and I feel that with the money it would produce some really exciting exhibitions."
Olli George, Coventry

"Over the years I have enjoyed the wonderful decadence of exhibiting Coventry's heritage. A city of innovation which has all too readily been forgotten by some. And now with this new contemporary setting and easy access, hands on approach for all ages, what an interesting way to learn about our history and look to the future!"
Colette Dyer

"The Herbert has been an important part of Coventry for 50 years. Over the years it has adapted to the needs and styles of a changing city and community but remains a place in the heart of many people from Coventry and the surrounding area. There are many activities and pieces to attract everyone."
Lydia

Daniel Walsh

"Very special to Coventry and we need people to know there are still reasons to visit here apart from the cathedral. We have a great history and our present could do with, in this case, a well earned boost. These awards shouldn't always go to "the big boys"."
Ann Wilson

Louise Morgan, Berkswell

"It has been a part of Coventry for 50 years. It has great exhibitions and fantastic days for kids during school holidays; staff are very knowledgeable and helpful."

"A much improved museum and gallery which is managed to promote full engagement into the arts in the region as well as telling some of the hidden story of the city."
Richard Shaw

"It has always got really interesting pictures as well some history on Coventry."
Isobel Lindsay

"Although I now live in London and have many great museums to view the Midlands needs the support of the grant to continue the great work of this gallery. I remember when I lived and worked in Coventry (and still visit family there) and always enjoyed popping in to view the history of where I was born and brought up. Also to view so much that inspired me to explore the world around me. Also to view the history of place and time from the stories of the war that my family told me to new art and discoveries. I also loved the cars where my dad loved to talk as he worked at Jaguar - there is so much of the Midlands tied up here as that has now disappeared as well as many more exciting things for people to discover."
Mrs. Cindy Hall, Hornchurch

"The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in Coventry is an important part of the city's history and offers a wealth of resources to the City's community. The staff are friendly and always willing is listen and help in any way they can. A visit there provides an opportunity to take time out of a busy life-style and focus on different aspects of life other than the day to day round of responsibilities expected from us."

Eleanor Morris

"I believe that the money would go to very good use; the Herbert Art Gallery has been a very important part for Coventry in the last 50 years. It remains in my heart; the events that it holds are very worth while. As I went there on my birthday many years ago with my school to learn about the Blitz – as my birthday is the 14th November, I had a very enjoyable time and believe that the funding will help the Herbert Art Gallery to continue their great services to Coventry."
Jade Sangha

"It is such an important source of history and culture for the local area."
Mr. C. Mellers, Coventry

"It caters for all ages and sexes. They have lots of different exhibitions throughout the year and the building is always very clean and tidy. Staff are also very pleasant."
Theresa Mason

"Because it is a wonderful art gallery and museum in the heart of the city of Coventry in an historic and cultural area of the West Midlands. It has a committed, enthusiastic and knowledgeable team dedicated to the art world. It is a wonderful place for youngsters and adults alike to broaden their horizons and for those who have a thirst for the art world. It is also a lovely place to linger for a cup of coffee and a sandwich at one’s leisure. I sincerely believe it is a worthy candidate for the Art Fund Prize 2010."
Margaret M. Griffin, Coventry

"This Art Gallery/Museum has the potential to make a significant contribution to the cultural life of Coventry."
Oliver Simon, Rugby

"The new extension to the building is wonderful, roof vaulting matching that of the cathedral in style. Light airy, and with an excellent new Local History section which has long been needed. Interesting exhibitions in the newly revamped galleries drawing new people into the museum. Lots of activities going on throughout the year to encourage young people into the museum too. Congratulations to all concerned."
Miss Lynne Pearson

"Most funding seems to always go to the capital, London. Coventry needs funding to rebuild this under-privileged City which bore the brunt of German aggression during the World War 2 Blitz… The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum has made fantastic strides towards providing a much needed cultural place of interest. Winning this coveted award would help to further improve a facility which is richly deserved by the multi-cultural residents of this great but under rated city."
David Mclanaghan, Coventry

"The Herbert Art gallery has always been there. As a child it was my first insight into a world of History. It has adapted through the times and runs a lot of weekend and holiday events for children. It therefore continues to inspire the younger generation to appreciate what it has to offer."
Stephanie Prentice

"The Herbert has been an important part of Coventry for 50 years. I enjoy taking my children, there is something for everyone, we loved the short play about the holocaust last year that was so moving, my children aged 12 and 15 were mesmerised. When they were younger the craft days were a great treat. The varied events have always made it an entertaining place to visit and have given my children an interest and love of art through positive experiences at The Gallery without having to travel. They are always striving to engage children and adults in art of every genre adapting to the needs and requirements of the people of Coventry providing an inviting and welcoming atmosphere. I hope to be able to take my grandchildren in years to come."
Tracy Pinkham, New Arley

Denis Adams

"It has a flexibility to it that always makes it relevant to the present day without ever changing that much. I have also never found more pleasant, helpful and well-informed staff anywhere else. I suspect it doesn't get many visitors from outside the Coventry area and it is a bit of a hidden gem."
Steve Hingston

"Because it is an excellent asset to Coventry and should be given all the help it needs."
C.G. Tiff

"For a fairly small museum with limited resources the Herbert has a very special collection of local artefacts many of which led the world at the time. Included are weaving, ribbons, watchmaking, cycle manufacture, cars, trucks, buses and machine tools; Herbert's were once the largest machine tool manufacturer in the world and it is Sir Alfred Herbert's legacy that has given his name to the museum. I believe that this award would help to secure the museum’s future and allow more of the stored collections to be displayed. The other important area is the traveling collections; these are very important and interesting and need to be continued. At present the local authority is looking to cut expenditure wherever it can; this award will undoubtedly help to secure the future of this well loved-museum."
David Mills, Coventry

"Modern up to date museum with local awareness and great facilities."
Mrs. Judith Parkins

Stephen Turnbull, Leamington Spa

"This is a lovely new building with a wide range of permanent and temporary exhibitions and events, as well as housing the local history library and archives. It is extremely important to Coventry, which unfortunately is very much a cultural backwater these days."

"The Herbert brings a great mix of art and history to Coventry, which, for all its strengths, is woefully overlooked. The Midlands are always eschewed by the arts in favour of London, which is why we need a strong arts network in the Midlands, and the Herbert is a leading light!"
Cath Grey

"The Herbert combines a modern building and modern technology and educational facilities with history and art, providing an antidote to the stuffy, boring image of museums in general."

Karen Berry

"The Herbert should win because it engages all ages, especially children into the world of art. I have taken my children to many an event in the school holidays ranging from Wallace and Gromit Exhibitions to Natural wildlife photography, and every visit to the Gallery has been a very positive experience. The Herbert also introduces visitors to the City of Coventry to the History of Lady Godiva, and gives a very detailed display of her life and struggles. The Gallery is a space that is full of energy and light and is always a respite from the hustle and bustle of city life! Something I feel is an achievement that would be great to be recognised."
Nicola Mailer, Coventry

"The Herbert should win because it has superb galleries which are of interest to all age groups. It's accessible to anyone with disabilities and offers excellent themed events to people of all ages. It reflects the multi-cultural nature of the city and is a strong advocate for Coventry's peace and reconciliation ministry. The variety of non-permanent exhibitions which it houses are always worth visiting. The coffee shop's also well worth a visit and the shop, although not large, always has something a ' little different' when one is searching for a gift."
Sandra Brownbridge, Coventry

"The physical reorientation of the HAGM so that its entrance is on a piazza with the Cathedral and Coventry University required vision, imagination, and real courage in the face of municipal conservatism. The repackaging of 'The Herbert' is no empty commercial gesture, with one eye on a fast buck, but an intelligent effort to reinstate a major civic asset at the heart of the community, and to recapture the energy and idealism that marked its original conception in the second half of the 1950s. The whole concept was a fantastic enterprise – and crucially, it works!"
Adrian Smith, Lymington

It's a great gallery in a lovely location! A credit to Coventry!"
Stephanie Hall, Rugby

"The Herbert Art Gallery underwent a massive regeneration project in 2007 and since this time has really become a focal point in the city of Coventry. Not only has it become a more modern museum and art gallery with 21st century facilities but its appeal due to this regeneration has increased significantly. In a city of former great industrialisation, heavily dependent on car manufacturing, it is one of only a few attractions in the city which offers a great culture and opportunity for young and old alike. It has truly made a difference to the surrounding area, the people of Coventry and the futures of many – which is why it should be considered for the art fund prize."
Timothy Beer

"Because it offers something to engage all ages. Has a great children's programme, and some of the exhibits are out of this world. It is ideally situated in the centre of the city, and easily accessible by local transport. As there is no entry fee it is an ideal venue for those on a low income. It is situated near to other of the city's attractions, i.e. the Cathedrals and the toy museum."
Anita Blower, Coventry

"In a city that was more or less destroyed in WWII the Herbert Gallery showcases hope, happiness, light and art. It really complements the University Square in the shadow of the ruined and new cathedrals. It's also a great place for a cup of tea and a cake!"
Caroline Farris

"The Herbert art gallery is the heart of Coventry."
Lewis

"Because it’s great; need we say more?"
Gemma

"As a full time mum, I find that the Herbert is a great place to visit with my child on a regular basis, as many of the displays are interactive, thus entertaining. It's a great place for learning about the heritage of Coventry as well as educating my child on artists. Its very family-focussed and I always look forward to the educational/fun activities that they hold during the school holidays."
Angela Sullivan, Coventry

"Because it has worked really hard to encourage families and children to visit the museum and promote its facilities."
Alex Bevan, Coventry

"I’ve grown up with the Herbert offering me exciting, inspiring and free things to see and do, and is the only place that has offered this interactivity in Coventry. It brings something that nothing else does to this city, and gives the community some creativity."

"Give people a chance to learn about art and culture, great place to go."
Romy Higgins

"A shining beacon of culture, in an otherwise (relatively) desolate cultural wasteland!"

Mark Frampton, Coventry

"An amazing cultural venue – the Herbert has recently been transformed and is one of the best family-friendly museums in the country."
Jim Atkinson, Wellingborough

"After exhaustive support from all the staff and contractors on the site, the building has 'risen from the ashes' of the initial building design and reflects the spirit of adventure of architecture. The space resonates the journeys of all the items on display and welcomes all with a typical introduction to the history of the city and its journey through war and peace. The excellent café run by Acacia Catering is inspirational in a rolling taste extravaganza which enlivens the heightened senses of all the displays and events. The sites children and adult inclusion activities ensure that we are all involved in enjoying and understanding the creative process and the journey of the artists, who exhibit. The site is easy to access. It would be great to have parking facilities in the city to ensure that all of us can get to the museum more often."
Ingrid Buecheler, Coventry

Long may it continue!"

"I have lived in Coventry my whole life and have probably visited the museum 5/6 times a year for the last 20. I have never been disappointed with the exhibitions, shows, workshops or staff and have spent many a lunch break or holiday wandering around in awe. The free aspect of this museum shows the commitment to getting culture into a city that lost a lot of history through world wars and city planners. Keep up the fab work guys."
Rebecca Toal, Coventry

Hilary Snell

"For more than 40 years I have visited the museum and never been disappointed. It's a real asset to our town and offers fantastic opportunities for children to learn, explore and play."
Rachel Culley, Coventry

"Because Coventry is a city that would benefit hugely from being able to finance growing culturally and being able to share various art platforms with the public for free. This is because it is a fairly small city, and the Herbert is its only major art gallery, and it therefore draws in a wide selection of people. It is vital in order to maintain and encourage Coventry's arts culture."
Adele Reed, Coventry

"The pure variety available on exhibit is so appealing; there is always something I would like to go and see. Their new makeover has added to their welcoming feel. I'm not 'arty' but I don't feel out of place in there; it is a great quality for a gallery to have."

Andrew Dolan, Coventry

Catherine Wright

"Beautiful, unique gallery in the heart of Coventry. Work from up and coming artists. Has wide range of media groups to get involved in, lectures, equipment etc. and works closely with the university an all round brilliant museum!!!"
Rebecca Horsburgh, Coventry

"For me the relatively modest size of HAGM makes it a friendly place; add to this the huge amount of natural light and the way the spaces informally (but not in any sense messily) seem to fit together, it feels as though you are being invited to wander around and to relax at the same time."
Stewart Smith, Sutton Coldfield

"Over the last few years the Herbert has undergone an amazing transformation. This has provided the facilities for a better more rounded cultural experience. With deep historical roots and now the height of contemporary too, the mix is finally complete. It has a more noticeable reach into the art community that was much needed for the area. Not only does it bring art and history to the public – it now brings opportunities to the local artists."
Adam Garratt, Bulkington, Bedworth

"Brilliant displays and a wide variety of different media and art forms. Wonderful and unique museum that definitely deserves the money to continue producing wonderful work."
George Barrett, Coventry

"It gives an opportunity for young talent to display their work. It has a varied mix of activities and exhibitions that are of specific and general interest."

Jane Stiles, Birchington, Kent

"It is a marvellous building, an excellent place of learning, and very much fun."
Michael Lanagan

"It’s a local place of wonder. It’s also a place of paradox. It both stimulates and calms. I think the Herbert is a local jewel that nestles in the midst of chaos. I love the variety of exhibitions and am astounded that the team present such a wide range of material with panache. I work in the centre of Coventry and feel privileged that the population have this brilliant facility that consistently raises our spirits. I would love the team to win this prize, as I am completely assured that they would use it to further enhance our facility in a creative and interesting way to enhance what is already a much loved facility."
Allyson Downes, Hinckley, Leicestershire

"They are so helpful to everyone who uses their facilities."
Maggie Armstrong

I loved the E-type Jaguar and where else to see it but in Coventry? x"

Andrew Normington

"The museum plays a vital role in enriching the lives of the people of Coventry, a city with a very meagre cultural scene and high levels of economic deprivation."
Helen Fountain

"We have very few art galleries in the area of Coventry and Warwickshire so we need to support the Herbert Art Gallery in every way. I have been going to the Art Gallery since I was a little girl and I loved to look at the magnificent work of many old and new artists and I envied them as I cannot draw a matchstick man – I just do not have the talent. It is a gift to able to draw and paint no matter what anyone says you cannot teach people to draw unless they have that gift as I know very well from trying to draw for years with no success. To be able to go and see the work of such talented people locally and not to have to go to London to see everything is the reason we need to support the Herbert Art Gallery. "
Maureen Ratcliffe, Coventry

"An exciting place to see lots of exhibits, organised activities for children, where the staff are friendly and helpful and there is somewhere to go and relax or eat; the toilets are clean and modern design. Take a whole day to wonder at your leisure and you will be amazed at what there is to see including many local artists’ exhibits."

Victoria Starritt

"It is the best example of the amalgamation of old tradition in modern facilities."

"The Herbert has always been a great local meeting place with great educational programmes for kids and fantastic exhibitions. There is not a huge amount to do in Coventry and the Herbert brings a bit of culture to our dreary city. With its beautiful new refit and fantastic café, it really is a place for people to get together and spend the day wandering round the artwork and sampling the wide range of food and drink available. We love the Herbert!"
Charlotte Lewis, Coventry

"The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum has been redesigned in recent years and has been transformed into a bright, interesting modern building with many features and activities that Coventry has needed for years. I recently returned to Coventry with my children and visited the museum, and they still talk about how much fun they had there and have since asked to return. I therefore feel that the Herbert should seriously be considered as a contender in this competition."
Josie Brigden, Darwen

Jeanette Wood

"Great place to go; I’ve been enjoying it for years:)"
Lu Kenn

"The Herbert is fantastic place to visit for both children and adults. I first came across the Herbert when attending my university interview and it definitely influenced my decision for the better. Coventry is a vibrant city, filled with culture and the Herbert definitely allows people of all ages and background to access it. I now work in education and community/youth arts and often use the Herbert as a reference point. Since its expansion, the Herbert Art Gallery has gone from strength to strength and the sky's the limit in terms of the benefits it has, and should continue to do for the local and wider community."
Lian Kelly

"Fantastic venue and exhibitions!"
Lindsey Taylor

"The Herbert is one of the only cultural things about Coventry. It has some really good exhibitions throughout the year and houses Local Studies archived materials; a very beneficial resource to Coventry's residents and even local non-Coventry visitors. The Herbert offers many good things to Coventry's public, including film screenings, courses and events for young people and families and it's a generally good art gallery and museum. Coventry would be very unfortunate if The Herbert should ever have to close or shorten its opening hours or make cutbacks due to lack of funding. The funding would enable the Herbert to expand on the great things that it does to become even more vast and interesting."
Jennysha Patel

"My local inspiration."
Russell Whitehead

"The Herbert Gallery is a breath of fresh air in the heart of the city. Its permanent exhibitions are interesting informative and fun; the work that it brings in is exciting and is appealing to Coventry."
Ruth Orman

"Having moved back to Coventry after being in London for 18 years, I have been proud to bring friends and visitors to this gallery. I have frequently found an exhibition that interests me at The Herbert, whereas in London I would visit perhaps 4 only once a year. Along with the new exhibitions there is a great history of Coventry to see in the gallery, from Lady Godiva to Ska, visual to interactive which can boost interest for children too. It's a beautiful gallery and well situated next to the old cathedral which pulls in visitors. People of Coventry have suffered a great deal due to the collapse of the car industry and winning this could mean a great deal to the community, visitors and the travel industry alike. Love it!"
Paula Brennan

"An absolutely remarkable turnaround from a limited, poorly attended, council-run local museum to a major regional attraction, with national and regional exhibitions, generating five times as many visitors inside 18 months. Well run, brilliantly staffed and with a real family ethos which has been recognised with a national award."
Joy Stokes, Brinklow

"The Herbert Gallery has been transformed into a welcoming, innovative space for visitors of all ages and abilities with exhibits which are not all covered behind glass and therefore breathes life into art, history and natural history."
Sue Jarvis, Coventry

"It's a fantastic place, well equipped, lots of special events, good café and facilities, central for the midlands, staff who know what they are talking about and are extremely helpful. The Herbert works closely with the city and works hard to provide a service not only for Coventry and the Midlands but for tourists from all over the globe. It is an 'all age' public venue, inviting, exciting, and well worth a visit!"
Lynn Jones, Coventry

"Coventry Cathedral is located next to the Herbert museum; between them they bring visitors and tourists to the city centre. The Herbert Museum is a delightful place that helps in telling the story of the cathedral and giving the message to many demographics of the importance of art. I hope the Herbert wins and make Coventry central a recognised place to be."
Tina Dyer

"It is a place can go to learn about art and it has a long history; it would be a shame to lose something that brings a lot of pleasure to the people of Coventry."
Jasbinder Sandhu, Coventry

"The Herbert has been ready to adopt new ideas and go forward by supporting Community groups that without them would have floundered."
Rita Stephenson, Coventry

"I went into the Museum on a very wet Saturday for a cup of tea. Two very enjoyable hours later we arrived at the café, we were so impressed with all of the design changes and layout of the Museum. Also the interactive items that even at 60+ we enjoyed using. Both my husband and I agreed that the LA had on this occasion got it all right!"

"The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum does a brilliant job in making Coventry people feel proud of their city's history. "The Herbert offers so much to the public and it's free! Especially during the summer, many children's memories have been made there; the workshops are always so exciting and they really do let the imagination of children run free. Not only that but they also run workshops for the emerging artistic communities. Overall they are a huge support for the regeneration of Coventry."
Lea

"They have many different exhibitions on and they're free. Also it’s very central in the City - so easily accessible by many people."
Laura Cox

"Fab!"
L. Keeling

"We're not the most forward looking town in Coventry (our cultural attitude is best summed up by the world's only inner city Ikea sitting slap bang in the middle of our historic skyline) but there are those of us who try. The Herbert is a light on the hill for us – a guiding beacon of cultural and academic success and one I wish more people would choose over the Ingvars, Billies and Virens a short distance away."

There is always new and exciting work on display and the gallery is happy to let other forms of art invade its walls, like dance, music, and theatre. The Herbert art gallery is a really great gallery and well worth visiting."

"Slap bang within the widely derided center of Coventry, The Herbert is a glimmering bastion of culture proving that while everything in the city does not glimmer – no doubt gold lurks if you just take a moment to look. It's so important to support these cultural institutions in more deprived areas, outside of London – and I hope it wins!"

Martin

Within the museum there are a lot of historical facts and monuments of the World Wars we have survived, including the Cathedral. There also many other various art pieces and facts within the museum that relate to the city and are very wonderful to look at."
Victoria Hopkins, Coventry

"It is in the heart of a vibrant city next to a university famous for its talented artists, however the city council are more interested in funding poor areas of the city than building on our bustling talents. It would be a very significant event for the city and would really put it on the map for the arts. With the gorgeous medieval buildings surrounding it, who wouldn't love it!"
Emma Burke, Coventry

"For sure a small venue it really does make the most of the space. The art work displayed is amazing. The gallery survives on donations and fundraising meaning there are limits to what it can achieve. Providing The Herbert Art Gallery with this grant funding would do so much for them and the city. The art gallery is one of the things the city can be proud of and with extra funding we could make it really shine."
Carla Hurst, Coventry

The galleries cover a variety of themes, most of which have a general appeal and the many individual exhibitions that have been put on have all been excellent, ensuring additional visits to the venue. The building itself has been upgraded and is light, airy and inviting. There is nothing stuffy about this museum and art gallery, it gives respect back to the oft maligned word 'museum'."

And then there's the Art Gallery, which offers a mix of classic and contemporary art. They have a really good programme of travelling exhibitions and activities for all ages. I work at a Children's Centre, so I was particularly pleased to see how family-friendly it is. I'm always promoting it to families with young children. Most important, it's OUR museum, about OUR City."

The Herbert Art Galley and Museum offer a vivacious ambience, and host some of the most magnificent event. An attraction that not only captured the heart of the locals, but also the foreigners, especially during graduation week where International Parents from University like Coventry and the Warwick University will have the opportunity to see some of the word finest talents, collections and exhibitions displayed at the museum. Inspiring many others, and promote cross cultural experience in a society friendly manner. In my humble opinion, that is why I believe The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum should win."
Gaston Chee, Coventry

"It was too cold for outdoor fun so we visited the Herbert for the first time with our two granddaughters, aged 6 and 3. We had just a fantastic time. The moment we walked through the door we were greeted by a super-enthusiastic, badge-offering young woman who pointed us in all the right directions. The girls loved being hands-on, and grandpa and grandma were enthralled by the History section: something indeed for everyone. Then, moving to the Godiva Exhibition, we were waylaid by Art for Families, and the girls each produced a fantastic Picasso in double-quick time. More drawing and hands-on Godiva, and then upstairs to the art: Ella was fascinated by Bacchus and Ariadne by Luca Giordano; Dilly loved the sculpture. Neither has stopped talking about their afternoon at the Herbert, and can’t wait to return. We had no idea a museum can be such fun. Amazing – thank you!"
David Meredith, Coventry

"Visiting the museum with my grandchildren not only turned out to be a fantastic and unexpected joy, it made me so proud to be a Coventry kid.
