"All five of us would like to say how much we appreciate the time and effort you put into our visit. One member said how much she had learned and another was thrilled to be 're-united' with paintings she remembered from when she was sighted… The touching and feeling was so important to us all. You made five people very, very happy for two hours, and more."

"The thumbnail picture doesn't do it justice. The Herbert's diversity makes it appealing to everyone. It's interactive and brilliantly accessible. It's a hub of creativity and imagination in a city where culture sadly doesn't always seem to be a top priority."
Mary Griffin
Annie Marie-Sandos, Social Inclusion Officer briefly shares her thoughts on her team's work and why she loves working at the Herbert
"I think The Herbert should win this award as they do as much as they can to include the local community and reach out to young people and minority groups in the Warwickshire area. I volunteer at the gallery and can vouch for the dedication, commitment and enthusiasm of everyone who works there."
Lucy Green
"Because its galleries offer a wide range of topics to appeal to all ages. During the school holidays craft classes are offered which appeal to very young children through to teenagers and the staff demonstrate commitment, enthusiasm and kindness. For this age group the environmental gallery contains excellent material and the other galleries offer a wide range of exhibits to appeal to a large audience. The building itself is clean, airy with excellent security staff plus a well stocked gift shop and excellent restaurant with a nice range of food. Evening events bring much needed entertainment to the City Centre and the Herbert is helping to restore pride to the people of Coventry who have experienced in recent years the loss of most of their manufacturing industries which has led to deprivation and loss of work skills and the stimulation from the Herbert for all ages is much needed."
Mrs Gillian Hartnett, Coventry
"The Herbert is a fantastic museum and deserves to win. It is a superb addition to the attractions in the city centre, being right next to the Cathedral and the Coventry University, and the Transport Museum is nearby. It provides all sorts of displays, services and attractions for visitors from outside Coventry and for local people, and tries to include everyone, children, retired people and everyone as far as possible."
Elaine Drybrough, Coventry
"The Herbert has rejuvenated Coventry in an exciting and dynamic way, making collections accessible, display innovative and the conversation between museum and community meaningful."
Aysha Afridi
"It has a long standing reputation for putting on relevant and interesting exhibitions for the local community. It works hard to engage with Coventry to ensure people of all ages have learning and cultural opportunities. It is welcoming and unstuffy and has made major improvements to increase its engagement with Coventry citizens."
Claudine McClean, Leicester
"The Herbert Art Gallery is a fantastic resource open to all of the local community and easily accessible based with the city centre of Coventry."
K. Launchbury, Coventry
"Very people accessible art gallery and museum. I never feel like I shouldn't be there because I'm not arty enough. A really good history of Coventry and has strong links to the community involving schools and groups in Coventry."
Suzanne Cantwell Birkin, Coventry
"The gallery has worked hard to expand and rebuild sympathetically on a site right next to the Cathedral, producing a most attractive new home for a diverse range of interests. It is very pleasing that they attempt to interest younger people into this exciting gallery and museum, this is something that Coventry has needed for many years."
Roger Shelbourn, Coventry
"We took a group of Visually/Hearing Impaired students to the Herbert last year and the staff really pulled out all stops to ensure our Learners got the most from the visit – talking to them, allowing those who could not see/hear to touch sculptures and other objects, not normally permitted. I'll never forget the trip and the enthusiasm of our learners afterwards."
Melanie Pritchard, Coventry
"The Herbert is an excellent resource for not only the history of Coventry but for the present and for the future. It caters for all members of the community, in particular the younger members, with its informative and well presented displays and events. Long may it continue."
Richard Playdon, Leamington Spa
"The Herbert not only has a vibrant and forward-thinking approach to displays and the information it supplies; it also offers local specialists and amateurs regular opportunities to get involved and have a say. This really puts the Herbert at the heart of the community in Coventry as well as being situated in the heart of the country. The contemporary feel of the displays allows visitors view the artefacts of the past juxtaposed with a view of their future and provides a real sense of place."
Tiffany Brownell, Greens Norton
"The atmosphere is very welcoming and the displays are well laid out and thoughtfully put together. A wide variety of exhibitions showcases the city and its heritage and appeal to adults and children alike. There are a number of in depth temporary exhibitions changing frequently, including at half terms and school holidays events to attract children to the museum experience. It also has an excellent cafe and best of all is completely free thereby reaching all members of the community."
Mrs. P. Leggett, Coventry
"I was born in Coventry over 70 years ago. The Herbert Art gallery and Museum adds much to the cultural side of the City. It is inclusive of the various immigrant groups who have come to live here and is a pleasant, fun place to visit. Our grandchildren love it and it has a nice café too."
Ann Grout, Coventry
"The Herbert is a place for all ages to experience the Arts. Coventry has needed somewhere like this for so long and it would be wonderful to see it develop further. Already it has captured the hearts of a real cross section of our community and I would love to see even more diverse exhibitions and events to entice even more. It really feels like this is the right time to bring The Herbert to the attention of the country. It is already a wonderful place and with more funding the possibilities are really exciting."
Liz Smith, Coventry
"Impressive extension making building much lighter and more accessible. Attractive and well planned galleries especially social history, Lady Godiva, and the Elements. Appeal to sections of the community not traditionally interested in visiting museums and galleries and work to encourage them to visit museum for first time."
Bridget Howlett
"Great work to include minority groups in Coventry and its neighbourhood."
Gosia Williams
"The Herbert Art Gallery regenerated itself into a modern community based gallery which successfully provides diverse exhibitions and events for all."

Mike Sweatman, Coventry
"It's a wonderful community venue that provides an educational and inspirational forum for all generations."
Kali Dosanj
"The new galleries offer a lot of interest for people of all ages. The Herbert goes out into the community, offering space and encouragement for the local amateur artists and working with archaeologists and historical groups studying the history of the city."
Sheila Staples, Coventry
"This is just one of the best art galleries/museums that I have seen. I am originally from South Africa, now living in the UK and with an American fiancé, so I have travelled a lot and have a world point of view. I would highly recommend them for this award as a shining beacon of Coventry's cultural and artistic identity."
Claire, Coventry
"Because of its excellent accessibility, vibrant display and exhibitions."
I.C. Groutco, Coventry
"Continually changing, new and interesting exhibitions, many of them specifically of local interest, a very well stocked interesting gift area displaying many local artists/authors' works, not available elsewhere. Pleasant friendly staff and good coffee shop."
Elaine Synnott
"Before moving to Warwickshire from Australia my view of Coventry was not great – after twenty years while I still have some concerns for the city – the gallery is a beacon of hope and enthusiasm and skill."
Kevin George Moffat, Southam
"This museum always excites us with new, visiting displays and exhibitions of great variety. There are also the more permanent exhibitions concerned with the varied and historical aspects of Coventry life and development. Children and adults are invited to have a hands-on approach in some rooms. There are helpful people to answer one's questions. The Herbert feels warm and inviting. There are many events for all, including opportunities for school and other groups to explore subjects in greater depth with guides. It is a museum to return to again and again."
Mrs. Sheila Sharman, Kenilworth
"The Herbert Art Gallery is spell-binding right from the initial entrance. The range of activities covered is wide and the rooms deeply engaging and whetting to the curiosity. Moreover, it seeks actively to involve all of its communities. I had not known when, as a beginner, I dropped in on a project course there – monoprinting – that due to the tutor support received, I would be enabled to produce with great enjoyment and absorption some art work which I valued enough to subsequently frame and display at home. I was heartened also by the incredible support given by the tutor to a fellow course member with visual impairment, which enabled her to access the museum resources and produce the most wonderful work. The Herbert is getting it right for Coventry, providing access and enjoyment of the city's heritage, making us step outside the box and widen our horizons."
Janis Ward, Coventry
"The Herbert Gallery should win because:
* The recent refurbishment/extension has been particularly well conceived and managed.
* The new Local History Gallery is an excellent balance of theme and chronology and establishes a strong "sense of place"; there is much meaty content which during my visit was obviously of interest to a range of locals from differing backgrounds.
* The Elements and Godiva Galleries show a real touch for focused coverage; both are obviously well used.
* Outreach has been well developed to users who have not normally been "museum types".
* The co-location of archives and local study centre is very well done.
* The infrastructure from galleries to toilets is well maintained and shows real attention to detail."
David Howlett, Hitchin
"I visited the gallery this February half term break with my son (16yrs). This is a modern exciting building set amongst the ruins of Coventry from WW2 era and most attractive in design. On entering it is very bright thanks to the glass panelling. The exhibits all directly relate to the history of Coventry City, from roman artefacts to the current Coventry City football team shirts. The great industrial heritage of the city is also fully encompassed from manufacturing of bicycles and cars, heavy engineering including the whittle jet engine, to weaving and ribbon making and the great watchmaking past of Chapelfields. The exhibits range from large to small items, all produced or used in the city. The multicultural nature of the city’s populus was also detailed so we could see who came and why leading to why we have such a diverse population today. It was truly fascinating."
Chris Hirst, Coventry
"The Herbert refurbishment project has provided a cultural, creative and historically vibrant place for Coventry's diverse community to enjoy on all levels. It's great for a coffee and shopping or to hear about the city's incredible journey from medieval pinnacle to industrial giant, to the blitz stricken to innovation central, to musical hub to what's next and I think has really helped visitors and residents alike to understand the complexities and reputation of Coventry. The architecture sits sensitively and seductively in view of the Cathedral/University district and the staff are helpful on every level. Finally, the independent café is one of the busiest lunch time destinations in the City and worth every penny with imaginative and healthy food. The curated programmes still have room for development and change is afoot with new curatorial residencies but the new Herbert continues to perform as a key cultural asset for Coventry."
Laura Elliott, Northampton
"The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum reflects the history of Coventry. It deserves national recognition as it strives to survive in a city undergoing depression and change. It is a beacon not only of Coventry's wonderful historical past, but also of its ability to change and look to the future. It is an inspiration to our modern multi-cultural population who are encouraged by its accessibility and friendliness to become more familiar with the city in which we live."
Barbara Matthews, Coventry
"A fantastic modern resource for all ages and all members of the city community. Varied exhibits and displays and plenty of inter active fun for young and old. A super place to visit."
T. Crompton
"The Herbert is a perfect blend of Coventry history and art alongside modern exhibits and touring art exhibitions. Local enough to be a true representative of Coventry but diverse enough to bring a wide range of art to the people of Coventry. I am constantly impressed by the exhibits it has and the variety."
Chrissie Waddington
"The gallery provides a wide range of opportunities for the multicultural population of Coventry and its environs. There is an ever changing range of children’s activities. There are also exhibitions of work by local artists again giving members of the public the chance to try working in various media. The Godiva gallery and the history of Coventry exhibits are well attended and the Natural History section is fascinating for young and old. All the staff are extremely knowledgeable and pleased to help in any way. Try the café to ensure that this is the winning Art Gallery and Museum."
Irene Bliss, Coventry
"The Herbert Art Gallery is a place of great interest for the people of Coventry. I have been there on several occasions and the exceptional service, exhibitions and artists brought to the Gallery mean the arts is for everyone – all ages and cultures. I believe the Gallery brings great things to Coventry and provides access to those who might not otherwise have the opportunity to experience such fantastic cultural activities. Thank you Herbert Art Gallery!!"
Lynne Kennedy, Coventry
"It’s a fantastic community-centred museum that is always willing to work in partnership with other organisations to provide excellent learning opportunities for families in Coventry."
Tim, Coventry
"It works with the community and has something for everyone. It inspires, communicates and complements as well as being accessible."
Sarah
"The Herbert has become a really vibrant community-focused museum since the rebuild, with lots of events and exhibitions to draw people into the museum, including some national exhibitions. It has a fantastic collection, and is just a really lovely museum to visit."
Rebecca Unsworth
"A great resource that has developed tremendously over the past year. The community has benefited from this innovative and creative venture. All age groups within Coventry have had access to this and long may it continue."
Frances Kendall, Coventry
"Our experience of going there was wonderful. There was so much for our grandchildren and the adults to do and learn from. We found it was imaginative, interesting and informative with exhibits that were tactile, or stimulated through sight and sound. It was a pleasure to have visited."
Terry Allaway, Burgh Le Marsh, Lincolnshire
"It’s beautiful, inspirational, fun, engaging, free, interesting, a good day out or half an hour browse and accessible."
Stacey Bains
"It’s interesting, friendly, understandble – always something going on."
Linz
"The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum is a fantastic museum for exhibiting local history and art, raising opportunities for new and upcoming artists to display their work in state of the art gallery spaces. Additionally it also caters widely to world famous artists and exhibitions with its wide array of temporary exhibitions throughout the year."
Lisa Williamson
"The Herbert has spent much of the last couple of years making its name and getting back on the map for its cultural space in the art gallery and museum sector. It has expanded into a magnificent place to visit and would well deserve the chance to even better itself within the art world gaining new opportunities for new art works for the future."
Rachel Watson, Solihull
"I really enjoyed the museum, I found it really interesting."
Bob Ellis
"I really liked looking around the Herbert Art Gallery. I thought that the art work on show was great!"
Harry Brown
"I love the Herbert Art Gallery. The exhibitions are amazing!"
Tara Behan
"The extension/revamp has created a wonderful space. It is inviting to just walk in. So close to the city centre, abutting the new university square. The exhibitions they have had have been very 'accessible'. I remember in particular the China exhibition and the wildlife photography. There was also the Wallace and Grommit. The Peace & Reconciliation gallery is thought-provoking, whilst the 'history of Cov' gallery on the ground floor is a great place to take visitors to get a sense of Coventry's history."
Andrew Rigby
"I feel that the Herbert Gallery should win this prize as someone who has made use of the gallery as a valuable resource for my professional work. I found the gallery staff open to new ways of working within the Coventry community and the gallery continues to work hard on making itself accessible to those that would normally find this kind of arena inaccessible and intimidating. As a member of this community I often make use of the variety of spaces offered and enjoy taking my child, family and friends there to share in the space."
Michelle Roaf, Nuneaton
"The Herbert's an interesting and enjoyable place to visit and carry out research in, where staff work hard to promote history and the arts to the wide range of public interest. Winning will enable them to do so much more as well."
B. Griffiths
"The staff are hard working and very friendly and they do a lot to represent minority communities and local history. They have had some great exhibitions on Coventry about the Asian community and the local music scene."
Bashie Bains, Coventry
"Unlike tourist trail cities such as London and Oxford, Coventry has to work hard to encourage visitors. The cathedrals help but their association with the Christian religion indubitably puts off some people, particularly militant secularists. The Herbert offers a wide range of interesting exhibitions and equally importantly, activities for almost all age groups. I discovered it when enrolling on a digital photography course in anticipation of my retirement. Since then I have visited whenever I can, such as for the Shell Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition or for only for 15 minutes for a coffee in pleasant artistic and architecturally interesting surroundings. I marvel at its development when all around the city suffers from the decline in the manufacturing industries that once sponsored arts and culture all around Britain. This oasis well deserves The Art Fund Prize to raise its profile and encourage more visitors."
Bill Gourlay, Stratford-upon-Avon
"Because it's an amazing museum that does so much for the local community! Glad to have it in Coventry!"
Peter Moncrieff
"Even whilst the museum was closed for the rebuild, the staff there were out in the community spreading the word. Their reach and range of activity has been truly inspiring. The new galleries are enjoyable, multi-layered, challenging and stimulating by turns and their collection of modern Indian art is absolutely fascinating and unparalleled in this country. I love them all and really want the team to win!"
Jenni Waugh
"The new HAGM building is stunning and houses some excellent galleries. The Peace and Reconciliation gallery is unique to Coventry and reflects the city's priorities. It is a really great place to visit."
Jo Hallett
"I used to regularly visit Lady Herbert's garden as a child and have very fond memories of it. It wasn't until much later that I visited the museum which, along with the transport museum and cathedrals, is a great place to experience the culture and colourful, important and at times tragic history of this city."
Michelle Compton, Telford
"Friendly, welcoming and relaxing a great place to visit and the café is good too."
G. Hammersley
"It is the only Art Gallery Coventry has; I've seen The Paintings, although not many, it is still something to admire. The inspiration behind The Herbert are the wonderful exhibitions it provides on a range of every 3 months, some of which are so fascinating you have to see them to believe. The Herbert provides an excellent cafeteria, lovely food and a wide range of drinks. It provides excellent customer service, to whom the staff are willing to help anyonel it is with my strong belief The Herbert Art Gallery deserves an accolade as prestigious as The Art Prize who knows to bring more enjoyment to the people of Coventry."
Colin Robinson
"An ever changing environment, full of inspirational projects and art displays for the benefit and joy of all who visit. Thank you Coventry City Council."
Margaret Harrison, Coventry
"They continue to develop the museum and galleries delivering exciting and informative 'heritage' for all ages/types of visitor."

"Herbert Art gallery helped new communities and BME and working by providing an opportunity to learn about art, building confidence, social integration and togetherness."
Mohamed Karur Sharif, Coventry
"It offers an excellent service to artists in Coventry who wish to showcase work and also is a good place for visitors to Coventry to visit. The museum is spacious and a good day out for kids, families and people who appreciate art."
Tony Michael
"HAGM is a lively community based museum and art gallery, which serves an area where such facilities are more limited than in the big cities. It relates its topics well to the local community interests and experiences and has a strong multi-cultural approach."
Carol Jones
"The Herbert Art Gallery enables ordinary and everyday local people to view works of art and attend a gallery – something which they would not normally consider doing within their everyday lives. The Herbert has an excellent track record of thinking of things which involve local people and make it an integrated art gallery, museum and meeting/eating place. For example, I attended a talk by an Asian woman on the issue of 'Forced Marriages'. Something which is of special interest in Coventry when we consider the ethnic background of many of its citizens."
Jean Arrowsmith, Kenilworth
"The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum seems to have its finger on the pulse of the city’s people and the times we live in. The Herbert’s ability to produce exhibitions and events that are inspirational and exciting, but still relevant to the city and the locality, is much appreciated. The café is also pretty special too."
Claire Lakic, Coventry
"The Herbert has, over the last few years managed to hold events which cater for many different members of society. Young and old, and various cultural groups have benefited from a host of interesting activities and exhibitions, most of which are free. There is always something for the children to do during their holidays as well as something for adults to participate in either for fun or education. Also the variety of visiting artists/performers visiting have been a great draw for locals as well as visitors from outside Coventry. The Herbert is a beacon for the future success of Coventry and the rebuild has made it an eye catching and functional place to visit. It is one the most welcoming and attractive places to visit in Coventry. The Herbert and Coventry would really benefit from this win."
Ms H. Hayre, Coventry
"Because it is a living museum with a diverse and engaging array of exhibits representing both local history and the wider cultural sphere as accommodated in a mix of a post-war renaissance building and a new recently built state-of-the-art, world class extension building which both sculpt together in peaceful harmony which reflects Coventry as a city of peace and understanding. The Herbert constitutes a prominent focal point in a city centre location and is very accessible to all citizens. It portrays the diverse backgrounds and cultures of the people of Coventry in a sympathetic and moving way."
P.J. Stanway, Leamington Spa
"It does a fantastic job of opening itself up to a diverse, deprived but changing and aspirational city. It has had creative exhibitions about new arrivals to the city, their contribution to WW2 – as well as creative studio space for people to hire and experiment in. It has been redeveloped to take its place within a wider "showcase" space, closely linked to both the three cathedrals and the heart of the city. Its "heritage" and "future" double act is amazing!"
Mike Attwood, Upper Boddington
"Coventry's Herbert Art Gallery and Museum has become a vibrant part of the city centre and it offers something for everyone. I have enjoyed its approach to exhibitions, encouraging visitors to feel part of each event and I always feel a sense of pride whenever I have escorted overseas visitors on a tour of the various exhibits. Staying for coffee, tea or lunch afterwards is also quite a treat! I am particularly pleased with the way the gallery welcomes young people through its promotion of sound and media. Historically, young people from less advantaged backgrounds would not "be seen dead" in a museum, but Coventry youngsters all know how 'cool' the place has become and its 'street cred.' knows no bounds. Well Done Herbert!"
Lynn Ritchie, Coventry
"The Herbert Art Gallery provides a great range of activities for all members of the family. As well as being a cultural treasure trove, it's also a very welcoming and inclusive place."
Denise Taylor, Rugby
"The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum has some excellent shows. Most importantly for us it has very good facilities for people with disabilities, including a very welcoming cafe."
Heather Massey, Anstey
"The Herbert has developed into a positive community asset with something for everyone. The inclusion of the local history centre, special exhibitions and talks that local people can relate and respond to and the focus on families and young people make it a very special place to visit. Long may it continue!"
Charles Harlock, Coventry
"I have worked at many museums but I can genuinely say that this one is a very special place for reaching into the local community. Many high end redevelopments distance organisations from the local area but the museum is open and welcoming to people from many different backgrounds and walks of life. Its design has been carefully considered to offer something for everyone. I am very proud to work for the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum."
Anne-Marie Sandos, Northampton
"The Herbert Art Gallery and Museum is a fascinating place, catering for a variety of interests. It is a valuable asset to Coventry in particular, documenting the city's rich industrial heritage for future generations. This is all the more important in the rapidly changing times in which we live, when industry is declining in the region. All visitors to the Herbert can be ensured of an educational and illuminating experience."
Kate Withers, Baginton
"They provide a range of events and exhibitions that meet the needs of the diversity in Coventry."
Rina Sarna, Coventry
"Substantial improvements bring the Gallery and Museum into the 21st century. Its location opens up the rest of the city to visitors and the food is superb. Events such as student exhibits and sales are productive and helpful and Bollywood 2tone exhibits link the citizens to the full heritage of the city."
Bill McCann, Coventry

Donna Bailey, Birmingham
"The museum provides a wealth of information regarding the social and natural history of Coventry today - reflecting on the social culture of this city of mixed fortunes and with reference to factors affecting the city both globally and locally. The Herbert provides a free facility for visitors to the city centre with frequently changing, perpetually interesting exhibits in a beautifully redesigned building – and (like the Tate Gallery) has a cracking café!"

Excellent café too which attracts a wide range of visitors - families, business people, everyone in fact, which creates a wonderful sense of being part of both the museum and Coventry in general."
Mat Clark, Coventry
"I feel that it should win because it has been a part of Coventry for a number of years. It is one of the few venues that families can go and visit and spend part/all of their day there free of charge, where you can learn about the city you were born in and what has happened over the years. It is full of warmth and nostalgia and has so much information to offer. I will never get bored of visiting the museum with my family as it still manages to surprise me each time!"
