"The media service at the Herbert has changed the lives of the young people we work with by enabling them to gain real life creative experience through working on music, film and new media projects in a real working environment; using a wide range of equipment and techniques that perfectly complement their work and study on a creative vocational course."
Michael Dabrowski, City College Coventry
"I am Me" – Rap Academy Project Outcome Performance Track. Awesome track by some of our engaged project workers – don't start listening unless you have five minutes to spare!
"I was first introduced to the Herbert Art Gallery two years ago where I was involved with the Rap academy. I found this very enjoyable and found some useful techniques during the project which included increased confidence to be able to perform on stage, rehearsal techniques and also gaining trust from some of the other work members staff included. I also worked on a project with Central Vision R-Place in the Herbert Art Gallery where I gained a much better understanding on how the equipment was used and what it was used for, from this I got a lot of interest in music and music technology which helped me find a Music Technology course in Coventry City College. I now work here as a volunteer where I do different jobs and learn different but useful things that could be a stepping stone to a future; I find the staff very friendly which has helped me gain respect for them as much as they respect me."
Craig Jones, Rap Academy Participant
"In the past few years the Herbert Art Gallery & Museum have played an important part in the Coventry music scene. They've hosted an entire exhibition about music originating in Coventry, they've allowed for bands to play gigs here including The Enemy, they facilitated the comeback gig for The Primitives and that's why they deserve to win this prize. They're about more than just holding collections and showing paintings, they celebrate what's new, innovative and happening right now in Coventry and Warwickshire. They strive to create ways for visitors less likely to attend a museum to find something that they'd like to see, and they do all this for free."

Richard Elms, Senior Creative Media Officer and manager of the media team shares his thoughts on their work and why he loves the Herbert
"The Herbert Media team is amazing! We wanted to learn how to create our own oral history films for Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery but didn't really know where to start. Herbert Media developed a bespoke 'introduction to oral history filming' training day for our staff, advised us on film equipment, delivered 1-1 training on our new equipment and editing software and came along to our first few interviews - helping to build our confidence and provide technical support if anything went wrong. We are now well on the way to creating our own films and are delighted with the results!"
Staff at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery
"Working with the Herbert Art Gallery has provided the students with the unique opportunity to engage with creative and media professionals on a regular basis within the workplace. For year 9 students this has proved an invaluable experience."
Matthew Connor-Hemming, teacher Bluecoats School
"The Herbert means a lot to me personally as we did one of our first ever gigs downstairs, for us it the Herbert represents the start of everything. Vote for the Herbert otherwise Oxford would win it and that'd be terrible."
Tom Clarke, The Enemy
"We love visiting the Herbert and the wonderful exhibitions. The touring V&A exhibits to the local 2 Tone events. Then the cafe is excellent food and service. A nice day out..."
Richard Wood
"The Herbert is a bright, fun filled place with plenty to do for young and old alike. The media department is particularly impressive and does sterling work with communities and young people who might otherwise feel excluded."
Rachel Heath, Coventry
"Thank you SO much for the films you created for the award. We’ve received so many comments on them. Once again, you did a brilliant job for us – thank you."
Helen Freeman, Scholastic Ltd
"Herbert Media’s hireable spaces are first rate for delivering training, but being in a gallery and museum setting brings an extra dimension which enables me to take my students out of the classroom when necessary and engage with them in a different way."
